To determine whether a capacitor is functional (or not) is more than the ability to measure its capacity. The ability to measure a necessary step, but a capacitor can reach a value within the tolerance are still characterized by internal losses that its ability to store charge will affect.
ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) capacitor should also be considered. ESR is the AC (alternating current) resistance of a capacitor. It is measured in ohms, and its value is acombining form representing the capacitor lead resistance, the tip link (between the components of the plate and lead) and dielectric strength. As an electronic technician uses a (digital voltmeter) DVM or VOM (volt-ohm) of this amount will be measures as an intrinsic function of a capacitor block DC (direct current). Both devices use a DC battery as a reference for all measures of resistance. That is not to measure the resistanceusing an AC test method.
A gauge for measuring the ESR ESR at a fixed frequency (usually) then displays the value in ohms. Once the value is determined, the ability to read the component. The technician then correlate these values against a graph search to determine if the capacitor is functional (or less). On the other hand, a tester measures ESR ESR capacitors (including fixed rate), but then show the results, in contrast with the value. This cansimple as an LED display in which three possible states: good, bad (high ESR or short circuit) and suspicious.
Before considering the purchase of an ESR meter, consider these criteria:
1. You should be able to distinguish a capacitor with low ESR capacitor is a short circuit. Most testers do not test for a condition ESR capacitor short-circuit (dielectric short) before the ESR measurement. This is extremely important, as a capacitor short circuit will affectperformance (best) or even explode in operating conditions (worst case). For example, shorted electrolytic capacitors are known to explode violently when placed in a circuit with a voltage applied. This must be avoided at all costs! For the state specific ESR Tester tool is capable of doing (direct current resistance) DCR measurement. If this feature is not available, a resistance measurement made with a DVM (DigitalVoltmeter) or VOM (volt ohm) over the wires of the capacitor. However, this is not an ideal situation ESR Capacitor measures should not be a multi-step process.
2. Drawings microprocessor or microcontroller (using the digital logic) have a level of accuracy better than one based solely on analog circuits. Please see the specification sheet ESA Tester. The type of display also provides some guidance on this. An instrument with an analog meter or bar graph display in generalnot to take any kind of digital logic circuits. Instruments with an LED, 7 segment display or LCD typically a design based on a microprocessor or microcontroller (and it would be better).
3. Tools of the test voltage must be less than 0.6VDC to prevent the conduct of active elements (due to the port rail, base, anode port, etc..) This circuit testing of components when necessary (when the circuit isdisabled, and tensions are allowed to bleed out).
4. ESR Tester should be easy to use and represent value for money. When consulting the specific piece of equipment carefully phrases such as "Single Button Control. This usually means that the tool follows the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle and takes a large part of the decision away from the technician. These tools provide a definitive result of the test (good, bad, and I suspect). If the battery operationimportant comparison of power consumption for the states ON and OFF. This can greatly save on the cost of replacing batteries.
